seems to me this tribe should be called quality film rather than foreign film. theres an obvious quality level on the films being discussed here which seems to over-rule the fact that they are ....ah.....foreign? not in english? which is more important?

Re: foreign film or quality film?
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 8:25 AMI see your point, but there are lots of different film tribes on here. Hunt around and also join something that might specialize as you seek.
David Byrne ran an essay in The NYT a few years ago the lines of "World Music? Aren't we past such definitions at this point" giving examples of cross-national recordings that might only be considered "pop" etc. Is this similar to the point you are making? I can see trying to 'up the ante' among the minds that gather here in this tribe, but in the landscape of 'film consumption in modern american' such as it pathetically is, I still see the virtue of saying "Pro-foreign film!" and "I'm not too lazy to read subtitles" or "I require story and actual acting, not just tits and explosions, when I go to watch a film", even if these things are a bit cliche to the intelligent.
It's like when you go to discuss film with someone you just met, claiming 'Persepolis' to be one of the best things you've seen thus far this year, and they come back with "Are you talking about that cartoon? About the girl from IRAN?!?!" and then tell you their fav was the chick flick or the superhero vehicle (not to slam ' the Dark Knight' I'm just sayin').
Sweet jesus, kill me now!
So maybe one puts too general a title on a tribe like this: still it's easier for the like-minded to find one another and have the sort of discussions they are looking for...

Re: foreign film or quality film?
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 3:43 PMforeign vs. quality. good question. case in point. as much as i have wanted to like French films, most of the ones i have seen have left me with this sense that an intellectual exercise was completed and a proof achieved. there are, of course, exceptions such as the brilliant 'Les Amants du Pont-Neuf' -

Mon, July 6, 2009 - 10:41 AMIf "foreign films" are defined as those with subtitles, then all non-silent movies shown in theaters are foreign. -

Re: foreign film or quality film?
Fri, July 10, 2009 - 11:33 AMWell, for example, has anyone seen the french horror flick "Inside" yet? It's not necessarily of the same aesthetic caliber as a lot of the films we've mentioned or discussed in this tribe (although the special effects make up work is like none other I've seen), and kind of subscribes to the b horror suspense set up of American and Italian shock/horror, but it's a foreign film worth discussing because it is SO STRESSFUL to watch. Inside is "quality" for a lot of technical reasons and might not go down as one of the historical greats, but I still think it's worth discussion here. Anyone?

Re: foreign film or quality film?
Sat, August 8, 2009 - 1:51 PMYes, when you you see the thread on the top ten foreign films you liked, you will get quality. And the intelligentsia in the states has always been seduced by foreign film, often the angst French thang, Eastern European surrealism or ultra realism, English huonour and otherwise. etc.... Us, Tribers are cultivated, talented and handsome to boot! I think we could add a thread for current mediocre Foreign films, and it will even the playing ground out. And lets get some Asian going, eh? Krab pun kha!
